Some of you may never have heard of, let alone been to the beautiful island of Mallorca. I know before I met my hubbie, I had never heard of the gorgeous Balearic Island, temptingly situated off the south east coast of Spain. But you can be darn sure that many of you probably DO have a piece of the culture on your person or in your house without even realizing it.
Check out some of the items Mallorca is most well known for, that you may not have had any idea came from the island itself.
Avarcas are a Mallorcan wardrobe staple. Everyone has a pair and everyone leaves with at least one pair too. I think these are actually originally from Menorca, but Mallorca has adopted them as their own. These adorable sandals will cost you more than 100 bucks at places like Anthropologie and JCREW. Here, you can have a pair of your very own for about 20 euros. PS. Both men and women wear them.
Ah, espadrilles. A classic summer wardrobe accessory for your feet. Whether loafers, sandals, platforms or flats, these beauties, also made for both men and women, originated in Mallorca apparently. These are from JCREW, but you can get them here for about 20 euros or less. Jealous?
If you live in metropolitan US, and probably lots of other places around the world, you’re likely to stumble upon a cute boutique with stylish yet comfy shoes with euro flare. This brand is a Mallorquin one and there’s an outlet not far from my house!
A fan of blown glass? Some of the most beautiful pieces in the world come from Mallorca.
Do you have one of these clay bad boys in your kitchen? If not, get one post haste. You can chop up pretty much anything, throw it in one of these with a bit of salt, pepper and oil, bake for about 30 minutes and voila. Yummy goodness. Bless traditional Mallorquin crockery.
